Definition: A rail diesel car, or RDC, is a combination diesel locomotive/passenger car. RDCs were manufactured by the Budd company, a major manufacturer of railway passenger cars.
Rail diesel cars were primarily used for passenger service in rural areas where the number of passengers didn't justify the cost of running full passenger trains. Rail diesel cars were sometimes configured to pull one or two additional passenger cars.
