articulated

From , former About.com Guide

Definition: An articulated steam locomotive has more multiple steam engines and sets of driving wheels. Articulated locomotives were the most powerful steam locomotives ever built. In Whyte notation an articulated locomotive has four numbers separated by dashes, instead of three; for example, a 4-6-6-4 Challenger class locomotive has 4 pilot wheels, followed by 6 driving wheels, followed by another 6 driving wheels, and finally another 4 pilot wheels.

Articulated passenger cars are adjacent cars which are coupled on a common truck which they share between them. Articulated cars are most often found on streamlined passenger trains.
