COFC, or Container On FlatCar, is one common mode of intermodal transportation. Containers can be loaded onto ships, trucks or trains to provide the most efficient transportation combination for the customer.
Today, COFC is dominated by overseas and domestic shipping containers in lengths from 20 to 53 feet. (Only containers up to 45 feet can be handled at most ports outside of North America.) But in previous years, much smaller containers were often used for "LCL" or Less-than-Car-Load shipments.
Note that COFC shipments don't have to use flatcars. Gondolas, spine cars and well cars can all be used. Where clearances allow, containers can be stacked two-high in wells. These "double stacks" offer more efficient handling with shorter trains.
