Definition: The proportion of the size of the prototype to the model. The larger the ratio, the smaller the scale.
Also Known As: Some modelers use scale and gauge interchangeably. Depending on the prototype, trains of the same scale can use different gauges of track. Likewise trains of diffent scales can share a common gauge.
Examples:
1:48 = O Scale 1:87 = HO Scale
