Customizing Model Trains: An Introduction

Acrylic paints and chalks recreate the specific rust patterns on this car. Every car is different, but the same techniques can be used.

Three decades of service have taken their toll on this car. No two cars will weather the same way. Distinctive rust, dirt and damage patterns make each car unique. If you are modeling a car in a time earlier than your photos, you can reduce the amount of weathering. This car has been photographed many times on line over the past decade which makes it easier to approximate the rate at which it weathered and backdate accordingly.

  • Paint the trucks and wheels grimy black.
  • Add rust streaks with acrylic paints and a small brush. Heavy rust patches on the roof of this car were created with acrylic paints applied with a stiff brush in a stippling pattern.
  • Finish with some dustings with brown and gray chalk powders to represent road grime and load spillage.
