Hooking Up Your Train Set Power Supply

Most train sets include a special track to attach power leeds.

Model train set power supplies and hook-ups vary greatly between scales and manufacturers. No matter what system you have, there are some basic assembly steps you should follow for safe and fun operations.

  • Attach all wires from the track to the power supply before you plug the power supply into your home.

  • Use the proper terminals. Some power supplies have separate outputs for track and accessories. If you do have other accessories to add, hold off until you've tested the train first. Troubleshooting is much easier if you test as you go.

  • Strip only as much wire as you'll need. Some sets come with pre-stripped wire or pre-attached mechanical fasteners. If you must prepare your own, keep bare wire to a minimum. If you have to bend the wire around a screw terminal, make the bend in a clockwise direction. When you tighten the screw it will pull the wire tighter.

  • Secure all of your connections. Make sure the + and - connections do not touch. Remove excess exposed wire or cover with electrical tape.

  • Do not try to disassemble the power supply for any reason. If you suspect it is defective, return it to the manufacturer or a qualified repair person. Depending on the unit, some components may hold a charge even when unplugged. Also, you may void the warrantee.
