F Unit (EMD)

From About.com

Definition: An F Unit is term for a diesel locomotive series of models built by EMD. The F Unit was one of the most popular "covered wagons" in history. It defined a standard body style for diesel power in the 1940’s and 50’s which was imitated by other manufacturers. The models of F Units produced from 1939 through 1960 include the FT, F2, F3, F7, FP7, F9, and FP9. Of these, more F7 units were produced than any other model. F units were smaller than the E and FP units which had steam generators for use with passenger trains. F Units have been popular in model railroading since about the time of their introduction, and are available in virtually every scale.
