draft gear

Definition: The device used on a railroad locomotive or car to connect its coupler to its frame, sometimes called a "coupler mounting box".

Thehe draft gear serves to bear the load of railcars being pulled or pushed, absorb minor impacts, and restrict the amount of slack between cars.

European railways typically use a coupler system that employs "buffers" instead of one that uses a draft gear.
