E Unit (EMD)

From , former About.com Guide

Definition: An E Unit is term for a diesel locomotive series of models built by EMD. The F Unit was one of the most popular "covered wagons" in history. It defined a standard body style for diesel power in the 1940’s and 50’s which was imitated by other manufacturers. The models of F Units produced from 1937 through 196 include the EA/EB, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8, and E9. E units were larger than the F and FP units which had steam generators for use with passenger trains. Model railroad manufacturers typically produce less E Units than F Units, particularly in larger scales, most likely due to the size. Lionel has historically offered historically incorrect models of famous passenger trains with F units in place of the proper E units.
