In model railroads, blocks refers to sections of track electrically isolated so multiple trains can be placed on the track at the same time. Prototypes block their track for signals to keep trains safely apart. Model track can be blocked for signals, or to control the trains themselves. "Block Control" wiring allows each block to be tuned to different controls. DCC systems can uses blocks as well for train detection, signalling and creating power districts to ease troubleshooting and current load.

A block can be created by cutting a gap in one (common rail wiring)or both rails. For added insualtion, an insulated rail joiner can be used.
