E6 (EMD)
Definition of E6: The E6 locomotive was the seventh in EMD's E Unit series of enclosed body locomotives. It is defined as a slant nose style covered wagon type passenger diesel electric engine. Manufacture of the first E6 locomotives were completed before the first stainless steel clad E5.

E8 (EMD)
The E8 locomotive was the fourth in EMD's E Unit series of enclosed body covered wagon style passenger diesel engine electric locomotives. It is a bulldog nose unit.

PA-2 (ALCO)
The ALCO PA-2 is is a diesel electric locomotive built in partnership with General Electric. The diesel engines used in early ALCO PA Units lacked the reliability of the engines EMD used in their E Units, giving the PA a bad reputation from which it never recovered.

PA-1 (ALCO)
The ALCO PA-1 is is a diesel electric locomotive built in partnership with General Electric. The diesel engines used in early ALCO PA Units lacked the reliability of the engines EMD used in their E Units, giving the PA a bad reputation from which it never recovered.

E9 (EMD)
The E9 locomotive was the fourth in EMD's E Unit series of enclosed body covered wagon style passenger diesel engine electric locomotives. It is a bulldog nose unit.

E7 (EMD)
The E7 locomotive was the fourth in EMD's E Unit series of enclosed body covered wagon style passenger diesel engine electric locomotives. It is a bulldog nose unit.

E5 (EMD)
Definition of E5: The E5 locomotive was the seventh in EMD's E Unit series of enclosed body locomotives. It is defined as a slant nose style covered wagon type passenger diesel electric engine. Manufacture of the first E6 locomotives were completed before the first E5. The E5 differed from the other slant nose E units in that it was clad in stainless steel for use with the famous Zephyr passenger trains of the Burlington Route.

E3 (EMD)
Definition of E3: The E3 locomotive was the fourth in EMD's E Unit series of enclosed body locomotives. It is defined as a slant nose style covered wagon type passenger diesel electric engine.

E4 (EMD)
Definition of E4: The E4 locomotive was the fifth in EMD's E Unit series of enclosed body locomotives. It is defined as a slant nose style covered wagon type passenger diesel electric engine.

F9 (EMD)
The fifth model in the F Unit series was the F9. Low production numbers on the F9 are due to the fact that by the time the F9 locomotives were built, railroads were shifting to the new to the road switcher-style of locomotive. As a result, the F9 was a less popular selection than EMD's GP9 engine.

GP9 (EMD)
The GP9 was the second in EMD's GP (sometimes pronounced as GEEP) series of diesel locomotives. The GP units were classified as "road switcher" engines, because they could be used as switchers or as a road engine.

F7 (EMD)
The F7 succeeded the F3 as the fourth EMD's F-unit series. For many years it remained the best selling diesel-electric locomotive of all time, ultimately succeeded by the EMD SD40-2 diesel engine.

F3 (EMD)
The F3 locomotive was EMD's successor to the F2, making it the second in the F Unit series of enclosed body covered wagon style freight diesel engine electric locomotives.

Erie-Built (FM)
The Fairbanks-Morse introduced enclosed carbody disel locomotives, produced to compete with the EMD E and ALCO PA units, were dubbed the Erie-builts because they were assembled at the General Electric plant in Erie, PA. This was because Fairbanks-Morse lacked the necessary space at their on facilities.

Bachmann Industries
A profile of Bachmann Industries, the world's largest manufacturer of model railroad trains and accessories. The Bachmann company markets model railroad trains in HO, N, O, On30, and large scale.

Kalmbach Publishing Co.
