Build a Portable Model Railroad

By October 18, 2012

Follow me on:

Unlike some of the other track plan ideas I've been publishing lately, this little railroad actually got built! And it's amazing how much fun you can have in less than 4 square feet.

With just a few cars, a few feet of railroad can become a switching challenge for hours of enjoyment.

This seemingly simple and very portable switching layout is very easy and inexpensive to build. (As shown here, without the train it can probably be assembled for under $100.) Its compact size can make switching a real challenge however - in a good way. As you use your little switcher to carry cars between the yard at one end of the railroad to the four industrial sidings at the other, you'll quickly discover that a two car train is a lot more challenging than you thought!

Perfect for the student off to college, the modeler on the go, or as a public exhibition piece to introduce new modelers to the idea of operations, this portable switching layout can provide years of fun. And yes, it could easily be adapted to a more permanent set up as well.
