The simple oval of track that comes with most train sets will get you up and running quickly, but it's not likely to captivate your imagination for long. Real trains don't travel in circles. There is an origin and a destination, there are cars to pick up, cars to set off, schedules to keep. Even if you don't have room for a huge railroad with miles of mainline, many of these operations can be recreated on your pike.
Switching layouts offer a lot of potential for model railroaders who love operation but lack a lot of space. Picking up and setting out cars, building trains and breaking them down, all in a compact space where every move counts challenges the mind and makes even a small layout seem huge.
