No Such Thing as a Blue Goose?

Tuesday August 26, 2008
I've often thought it would be nice to have a Blue Goose in my collection. I've been reading up on the Blue Goose recently and came across an interesting assertion in one online post. This particular source asserts that the name Blue Goose, commonly used in referring to locomotive 3460 of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, was coined by model railroaders after the locomotive had been retired. The author supported this assertion saying that all references to this locomotive they found in train magazines prior to 1950 referred to her as the "Blue Bird".

All locomotives of the ATSF 3460 class were 4-6-4 Hudsons. But the first of the series, bearing the number 3460 was unique in that it was outfitted with streamline shrouding, making it the only streamlined steam locomotive ever run by the ATSF. Painted in shades of blue, this singular locomotive was, if one accepts the information I've cited, dubbed the Blue Bird by the railroad, and later the Blue Goose by modelers. The ATSF 3460 Blue Bird pulled the passenger train named the Chief between Los Angles and Chicago from around 1938 into the 1950s.

Sadly, most of the HO scale Blue Goose models I've seen and the single N scale version seem to have numerous discrepancies from the few actual photos I've seen of this locomotive. Perhaps now that Kato has done such an exceptional job on the Southern Pacific GS-4, they might consider giving us an accurately modeled N scale "Blue Bird".
